I'm Determined

...to teach Luca one thing...

I don't think he has ever heard the "D" word yet :-)

What was your baby's first words?

He's totally adorable (like always)! A random question -- have you given much thought to childcare options once you return to work (daycare, nanny, nanny share?) I ask because I'm obsessed with thinking about it these days. I used to think I knew what I wanted, but now I'm totally confused!

We still don't know. Before Luca was born we thought we would for sure get a nanny, so we didn't bother going on any daycare lists. Of course, once he was here, we (ahem, Jay) decided that daycare might be better. So we are on the waiting list at 2 nearby daycares but have no idea if we'll make it. If we don't, I guess we'll get a nanny. I like the idea of daycare for Luca in that he will be around other kids and that is a good thing. Of course, I think that a nanny would be great in that he'd be sleeping in his own crib, playing with his own toys, and wouldn't get as sick. Plus Jay and I wouldn't be as rushed/stressed everyday getting ready for work and coming home (no pick ups/drop offs/rushing to cook Luca dinner etc). So count me in the "totally confused" pile like you!
Daycare is so insane in Toronto. There are no good home daycares near me and the city run daycares have massive waiting lists and are as expensive as big corporate daycares (i.e. 2K a month while Luca is an infant). Crazy!

Aww...not fair about the "D" word. :) Seemed like Luca was just as determined as you were. For a few times I thought the "M" word was going to come out loud and clear. So close!

Oh wow, he's trying so hard, he's adorable! What a little sweetheart! My 8 month old hasn't been able to say "m" sounds yet and has been saying "dad dad dad dad" as her favourite sound for a couple of months. I get all the hugs and kisses so that's only fair.

Made my morning. The cutest thing ever. He is so obviously trying to say it.

My son was not very vocal. He did everything from zero to fifty. Breastfeeding to meals. Not talking, to sentences. Now a physics/chem college senior. Enjoy all these moments, time flies.

I know! I'm struggling with all the same issues. i love the idea of my daughter being around lots of other kids and the structure that comes with daycare. But I also think it would be great for her to spend time with one caregiver while she is still so young, to keep her sleep routine, and it would be less stressful for us.

As much as infant daycare costs, it's still a much cheaper option over a nanny. I think I've been able to get a good estimate of all the costs -- salary, EI, CPP, WSIB, TTC pass etc., and it's a lot more expensive than daycare. (If you want to see any of my calculations, let me know.)

So, while I think a nanny would be best for us, I'm not sure I can stomach the expense. But then it feels awful to make an important decision regarding your child based on money. AGH!

Too funny! Ash hasn't gotten around to trying to talk yet. I can't wait to hear that come out of his mouth!
